Pratt Recylcing Facility Holds Opening Festivities

A shining example of Denton’s environmentally conscious initiatives, Georgia-based Pratt Industries, a privately owned paper and packaging company, brings a 40,000 square-foot materials recovery facility to 1401 South Mayhill Road. The facility celebrated the beginning of its full operations on America Recycles Day, November 15, a nationally recognized holiday dedicated to promoting recycling.

Myles Cohen, president of Pratt Industries’ recycling division joined Shirlene Sitton, Recycling Manager for the City of Denton, Mayor Mark Burroughs and representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and Keep Denton Beautiful for the grand opening Tuesday afternoon. The event offered refreshments, tours of the facility and an announcement of the Keep America Beautiful Recycle Bowl Competition winner, Ryan Elementary School, as well as remarks from keynotes and a ceremonial ribbon cutting.
This project has been one of hard work and dedication, “a dream come true,” says Sitton. Denton signed a 20-year agreement with Pratt back in 2007, and the facility was built in March of 2010, but full operations did not begin until recently. The Denton recycling facility, one of Pratt’s 10, is “single-stream,” which means it accepts materials mixed together for collection. The materials recycled are then used for production of their 100-percent-recylced cardboard and paper products.

Currently employing 30 people, Cohen says the plant is only using 25 percent of its total capacity, and urges more businesses to participate in the recycling endeavors in order to create a healthier, happier, and greener Denton.
