Downtown Transit
Passenger Rail Service
The Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA) was formed in 2003 when the cities of Denton, Lewisville and Highland Village voted to fund transit in Denton County through sales tax revenues. Two transit stations will be built in the City of Denton. The terminating station for the system will be located in Downtown Denton, providing passenger rail service from Denton to Carrollton, where riders may transfer to the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) system and continue into the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. The system is expected to be in operation in 2011.
The Downtown transit station will be less than one-half mile from the historic Downtown Square. The City is currently planning an Arts Corridor so that the transit passengers’ walk from the station to Downtown will be pleasant and enjoyable.
Transit-Oriented Development Overlay District
The City is in the process of developing a special zoning district for the two proposed stations. Each station has its own function and the envisioned development is somewhat different for each one. The downtown station will have an urban feel, encouraging pedestrian and bike activities and limiting automobile traffic. The central station for DCTA bus service is planned near the platform so that many of the 22,000 plus university students, workers and visitors who commute to Denton can ride the train and transfer to campus, shopping, or work easily.
